Shibori pattern making & dyeing

When:

Friday, August 15, 2008
2:00-4:00 pm

Using reclaimed and natural materials, Craft Gym, in partnership with the Permacouture Institute, will teach a shibori sampler. We will guide participants through a simple Kanoko shibori (binding) and Kumo shibori (pleated) pattern making use of cloth, rubber bands, chopsticks and pebbles. Then participants can experience natural edible dyes with our pre-prepared vats. Participants are welcome to hang their finished pieces to dry for a few minutes, creating a dynamic and colorful backdrop. Instructions on finishing techniques and embellishments will be available for participants.

Basic metalworking techniques

When:

Sunday, August 17, 2008
noon-1:00 pm OR 2:00-3:00pm

Using reclaimed license plates as our base material, we will teach basic metal shaping and cold connection techniques. Particpants are invited to cut and file plates and will learn how to use rivets and adhesives to assemble layers of metal. Finished work can be made into a badge, pendant, belt buckle or other fun adornment.
