sgraffito tilemaking

Sgraffito Tilemaking
Level: Beginner

In this workshop you will practice the technique of sgraffito, an early form of ceramic decoration made by scratching through a slip veneer to expose the underlying, contrasting clay body. We will also discuss how to make and set tiles. Your tiles will be ready for firing at the end of this workshop and will be available for pickup in approximately 2 weeks.

Ceramic Coiled Bowl

Learn and practice the technique of coiling while constructing your own handmade bowl. At the end of this workshop your piece will be ready for bisque firing. Return to the studio on any open studio night to glaze your piece. Once it is glazed, we’ll fire it again and it will be ready for pick up at the following open studio.

Weave beads together by hand to create a patterned canvas. In this workshop, you will get oriented with the art of seed beading with peyote stitch and variations on this stitch. We will discuss threads, waxes, and needles, and you'll even learn how to use weaving to create a bead ball clasp closure. You will make and take a 1 - 2" wide cuff.

pewter casting

Pewter Casting
Level: Beginner

Get down and dirty with a fundamental metalsmithing technique. This workshop will showcase two different methods for metal casting. Choose which method you’d like to use to create your own form and which to use with a found object. Design and craft your own reverse mold out of plaster of paris, then pour in pewter to make your own medallion or other flat sculptured piece. Work with polymer clay to make your own form, bake, then press in sand to create a replica in pewter. You’ll leave with some great tsotchkes for adornment and the knowledge of how to heat, pour, file and finish pewter.

Book Mending

All well-loved books go through some wear and tear. Give them the TLC they need by learning basic repair/mending techniques to restore these damaged tomes. We’ll cover many commonly encountered problems including: loose bindings, fallen pages, torn pages, torn bookcloth corners and damaged dust jackets. We’ll also go over preservation principles, preventative measures, and treatment decision-making (analyzing what's wrong w/ a book and deciding just how far you want to take its treatment). Books in need of repair will be available to practice on. You are also encouraged to bring a few books from your own book collection (excluding rare or valuable ones) to analyze, discuss, and repair in this workshop.
