Mola-inspired Handbags
Level: Beginner
Create your own handbag and learn more about mola* craftsmanship. Using a technique called reverse appliqué, you will layer fabric and cut out patterns, exposing colors from the underlying pieces. This is a great review of sewing basics, and you will end up with a functional handbag with two handles, a flat bottom, and a lining. All equipment (incl. sewing machines) and materials will be provided.
*What is a mola? Traditional molas are handcrafted works created by the women of the Kuna tribe of the San Blas Islands off the eastern coast of Panama. Originally, the word "mola" meant cloth, but now it describes both the blouse of the Kuna traditional dress and the individual panels making up the bodice. Molas are a relatively recent craft, and are thought to have derived from a tradition of elaborate body painting. Traditional motifs are geometric or abstract designs, based on natural formations found in coral.

Skirt Construction: Intro to Garment Sewing
Prerequisite: Sewing 101 or equivalent experience. Zipper setting experience recommended.
Twirl about in your own fashion. In this introduction to garment sewing, you will create a simple A-line skirt and be ready to move on to other wardrobe staples.
This class will cover how to stitch a French seam, and work with fabric on the bias. Commercial pattern basics such as pattern marking definitions, placement for cutting fabric with stripes, plaids or a nap, as well as pattern selection will be discussed. We will be working from a commercial pattern. If you have taken the Patternmaking: Skirt workshop, you can work from your custom pattern. Fabric for your project will be selected per request. You will make and take home a knee-length A-line skirt with a zipper and hook & eye closure.

Quilting Basics II: Sashiko-inspired Clutch

Create your own clutch and learn more about sashiko* craftsmanship. This is a great review of machine sewing basics and an introduction basic quilting and basic embroidery techniques. * Sashiko is a very old form of sewing using a simple running stitch sewn in repeating or interlocking patterns through one or more layers of fabric.
Traditional patterns were inspired by natural objects like bamboo, ocean waves, and flowers.
Originally intended for mending or quilting several layers of fabric for warmth and durability, sashiko patterns work well in contemporary projects. Examples of beautiful sashiko stitching techniques can be found in many Asian cultures, but it is often associated with the Japanese.

Costuming from the Neck Up: Face Painting

Didn’t have time to get a costume together, but have someplace to be tonight? Come by and we’ll help get you ready for a night out. Supplies and techniques will be available so you can pair up for some face painting with stencils or freeform. Brush and sponge techniques will be covered. Instruction for each session is one hour, but feel free to stay longer for more involved projects.

Gift Wrapping
Level: Beginner
Bring two boxed object to wrap, or use our boxes to practice on, and we’ll give you ideas for the rest of your holiday wrapping. In this workshop, you will learn how to make a variety of bows (including classic, tuxedo, pinwheel), and practice different techniques for paper appliqué including stamping, cut-outs, collage, and simple embellishing with paper, felt and fabric. You will also discover new objects to use to tie with and find alternatives to using tissue paper to cushion your gift.
