Using a technique called reverse appliqué, you will layer fabric and cut out patterns, exposing colors from the underlying pieces. This is a great review of sewing basics, and you will end up with a functional handbag with two handles, a flat bottom, and a lining. All equipment (incl. sewing machines) and materials will be provided. *What is a mola? Traditional molas are handcrafted works created by the women of the Kuna tribe of the San Blas Islands off the eastern coast of Panama. Originally, the word "mola" meant cloth, but now it describes both the blouse of the Kuna traditional dress and the individual panels making up the bodice. Molas are a relatively recent craft, and are thought to have derived from a tradition of elaborate body painting. Traditional motifs are geometric or abstract designs, based on natural formations found in coral. |
